Market trends and analysis for Neuves-Maisons

The Neuves-Maisons market is supported by its position within the catchment area of Nancy and by prices that remain affordable. Apartments in the centre and the former estates, like townhouses, find buyers among first-time purchasers and working people looking for a cheaper home than in Nancy. The redevelopment of the industrial site and the residential spread of the metropolitan area sustain steady activity.

Several factors frame the change in values. The direct rail link to Nancy, the proximity of employment centres and the price gap with the metropolitan area support demand. Conversely, the town's industrial image, the age of part of the stock and energy renovation issues temper price growth, with prices remaining well below those in the south of the Nancy urban area.

The history of Neuves-Maisons

Neuves-Maisons owes its current appearance to the industrial revolution. A village in the Moselle valley, the municipality entered the iron age from the 1870s, when a metalworking company chose the site for its blast furnaces, close to the iron mines of Chaligny and Maron and at the junction of the Haute-Moselle canal and the railway. The steel industry then radically transformed the locality.

For a century, the town lived to the rhythm of the blast furnaces and the iron mine, worked until the end of the 1960s. In the 1970s, several thousand employees produced hundreds of thousands of tonnes of cast iron every year. This working-class history, often summed up by the expression the iron people, left a lasting mark on the population, the urban layout and the collective memory of the municipality.

The closure of the mine and then the disappearance of the blast furnaces in the 1980s opened a period of redevelopment. Some steelmaking activity remains on the site, while the town, part of the Moselle et Madon inter-municipal authority, has established itself as a residential municipality in the south of the Nancy urban area, valued for its affordable prices and its link to Nancy.

The town retains the imprint of its steelmaking past and a housing stock that is partly old, inherited from the workers' estates.
