The history of the district

The Halles district is laid out around the covered market of Tours, on Place Gaston-Paillhou, west of the centre. Built by the architect Gustave Guérin on the model of the old market halls of Paris, the building gave the district its name. Rue des Halles was cut at right angles to rue Nationale to go with that scheme.

The covered market brings together some forty traders, specialising in food, and remains one of the food hubs of the town. Place Gaston-Paillhou also hosts an open-air market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Lively in the morning around the market and quieter for the rest of the day, the Halles district combines local shops with town-centre housing. Its position between the Vieux-Tours quarter and rue Nationale makes it a sought-after area.
