The history of the district

The Centre-ville of Agde is the historic core of the municipality, on the banks of the Hérault river. A former Greek city, it retains a dense fabric of old alleyways built in basalt, the black volcanic stone that earned Agde its nickname as the black pearl of the Mediterranean.

The district is organised around the Saint-Étienne cathedral, a fortified building in basalt, the river quays and the passage of the Canal du Midi, whose famous round lock marks the entrance. The area includes Le Pérou and the surroundings of the station. Its housing stock is overwhelmingly made up of older buildings.

On the market, the Centre-ville sits around 1 708 €/m² for an apartment: by far the most affordable area in Agde, well below the coast, despite its heritage. With about 55 sales a year, it is also the most active district of the year-round town: its average is reliable and serves as a benchmark for the local residential market.
