The history of Belfort

Belfort is the prefecture of the Territoire de Belfort, the smallest department in mainland France outside the Paris region. The town lies on the Savoureuse, in the Belfort Gap, the natural corridor between the Vosges and the Jura massifs that links the Rhône valley to the plain of Alsace. Its citadel, remodelled by Vauban, overlooks the old town from its rock.

The town owes part of its identity to the siege of 1870-1871, whose resistance remains famous and is commemorated by the Lion of Belfort, a monumental sculpture by Frédéric Bartholdi carved at the foot of the citadel. Belfort is also an industrial town, marked by the history of the great factories that are today Alstom and General Electric, and a student town with the Belfort-Montbéliard university of technology, the UTBM.

The geography of prices follows this history. The historic centre, below the citadel, and the residential districts of the north are gaining value, while the large estates of les Résidences, La Méchelle and le Mont remain more affordable. The Savoureuse crosses the town from north to south, separating the old town, to the east, from the retail centre and the faubourgs, to the west.

Who buys in Belfort

The Belfort market attracts first-time buyers, families, people working in the industrial and hospital employment base, students and buy-to-let investors, carried by the presence of the UTBM. Demand focuses on apartments in the centre and the old town, on the houses of the residential districts of the north and on the more affordable properties of the large estates. Prices, measured for a prefecture, are sought after for the setting, the proximity of employment and access to housing at a controlled cost.
