The history of the district

The Les Provinces district is a large estate in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, on the heights of La Fauconnière, in Octeville. It was created in the 1960s as a priority development zone, on the Baquesne plateau, to meet strong demand for new housing. The district was opened in 1965.

Designed to hold several thousand homes, the estate tripled the population of Octeville in about twenty years. The name La Fauconnière recalls the former name of the Octeville hill. After the merger of Cherbourg and Octeville in 2000, an urban renewal project was launched for the area.

Today, Les Provinces is a district of blocks of flats on the heights, with its own facilities and views over the city and the roadstead. It is the most affordable area in the apartment market of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin.
