The history of the district

Méan-Penhoët is the oldest district of Saint-Nazaire, in the east of the town, near the mouth of the Brivet. Méan and Penhoët were attached to Saint-Nazaire in 1865. It was here that the first shipbuilding yards developed.

Between 1840 and 1870, the wooden shipbuilding yards of Méan reached their peak. The opening of modern shipyards then brought about the decline of those family yards, while the Penhoët yards took over with metal shipbuilding, the origin of the great transatlantic liners.

Méan-Penhoët keeps a strong maritime and working-class memory today, close to the Chantiers de l'Atlantique. The district, which has a branch town hall, retains older housing and a working-class character, among the most affordable areas in the town.
