The history of the district

Palente stretches to the east of Besançon, forming with les Orchamps and Saragosse a group born in the 1960s. In the nineteenth century the area held a military parade ground, until the town acquired the land in 1951 to build social housing there quickly, in response to post-war population growth. The district is crossed by the rue de Belfort, a historic road that links it to the centre and to the Chailluz forest.

Palente carries the memory of one of the great workers' struggles of the twentieth century. It was here, on the chemin de Palente, that the LIP watchmaking factory stood, whose industrial dispute from 1973 to 1978, marked by the occupation of the factory and the resumption of production by the workers, drew national and international attention. That working-class and watchmaking legacy remains a strong marker of the district's identity, today made up of blocks of flats and detached-house areas.

The most affordable market in the town, Palente offers prices appreciably below the Besançon average. Supply there consists of apartments in shared-ownership blocks and houses in the detached-house areas, prized by first-time buyers on a measured budget and by families. The proximity of the Chailluz forest and the residential quiet of the house areas soften the image inherited from its working-class history.
