The history of the district

Brou occupies the south-east of Bourg-en-Bresse, around the royal monastery that Margaret of Austria had built in the early sixteenth century. The flamboyant Gothic church of Saint-Nicolas-de-Tolentin, its glazed tile roofs, its openwork rood screen and the princely tombs it houses make the district the heritage landmark of the town.

Long outside the walls, Brou was caught up by urban growth and today forms a continuous district with the centre, along boulevard de Brou. Its fabric mixes Bresse farmhouses, tenement buildings and blocks of flats, around rue Amédée-Fornet, boulevard Victor-Hugo, rue du Stand and place de la Commune.
