The centre of Évreux occupies the bottom of the valley of the Iton, whose channels run through the city and line the walkways. It is the core of the Gallo-Roman town, then of the episcopal city, laid out around the Notre-Dame cathedral and the belfry.
Three quarters destroyed by the bombing of June 1940 and then of 1944, it was rebuilt in the 1950s on a grid plan, with open squares, which contrasts with the medieval streets kept around the cathedral. The restoration of the building was completed in 1973, giving the city back the spire of its lantern tower. The belfry, left standing among the ruins, has been listed as a historic monument since 1962.

The centre attracts first-time buyers, investors looking for rental yield and households who want to do everything on foot. Demand is for the apartments of the reconstruction, often generously sized, and for the older buildings kept around the cathedral, more sought after and more expensive.
