The history of the arrondissement

The 8th arrondissement stretches from Le Prado to the southern coastline, taking in Le Périer, Bonneveine, Sainte-Anne, Montredon and La Pointe-Rouge. Formerly an area of country houses and farmland, it was urbanised around the avenue du Prado and the seafront laid out in the 20th century.

The Prado beaches, reclaimed from the sea in the 1970s, the Parc Borély and its château, and the seafront of La Pointe-Rouge made it a major leisure and residential area. Le Périer, on the heights, has long concentrated bourgeois housing and villas.

The 8th is today the great residential and seaside arrondissement of Marseille, and the second most expensive after the 7th. Beaches, parks, schools and proximity to the centre by metro make it a sought-after family address, from the apartments of Le Prado to the villas of Montredon.

Who buys in the 8th

The 8th mainly attracts affluent families and executives looking for a residential setting close to the sea, the beaches and the parks. Demand covers both the large apartments of Le Prado and Bonneveine and the villas of Le Périer and Montredon. The area also appeals to wealth-focused buyers and second homes, drawn by the seafront. Properties with a terrace, a view or immediate proximity to the beaches stand out clearly.
