The history of the district

Locmaria is the historic cradle of Quimper, set on the bank of the Odet downstream of the centre, at the head of the river's ria. It was there that the original town emerged, around a port established in antiquity, and there that the oldest abbey in Quimper was founded.

An abbey dedicated to Notre-Dame was founded there in the eleventh century by the count-bishops of Cornouaille. That monastery, one of the oldest in Brittany, was led by Benedictine nuns and enjoyed exceptional privileges. The district is best known as the home of Quimper faience, made here since 1708 in the historic pottery quarter, near the town centre.
