The history of Wattrelos

Wattrelos is a town in the Nord department, part of the Lille European Metropolis, on the north-eastern slope of Roubaix. It adjoins Roubaix and Tourcoing and stretches to the Belgian border, facing Mouscron and Estaimpuis. Its territory is crossed by the Roubaix canal, a former industrial waterway that linked the town to the navigable network of northern France.

Long a farming village, Wattrelos was transformed in the nineteenth century by the rise of the textile industry, in the wake of Roubaix. The Prouvost works and the spinning mills shaped a working-class town, still visible in its brick workers estates and in the museum of popular arts and traditions. After the war, the town grew with vast housing schemes such as the Beaulieu priority development zone, the Nouveau Laboureur and La Mousserie, built to house mill families.

The geography of prices follows that history. The Centre, around the town hall, the Saint-Maclou church and the shopping Grand-Rue, holds the most sought-after market. The eastern areas, around Le Crétinier and Le Laboureur, and the south, around Beaulieu, come next, while the west, around Sapin Vert, remains the most affordable.

Who buys in Wattrelos

The Wattrelos market mainly attracts first-time buyers, families and working people from the Lille metropolitan area looking for moderate prices close to Roubaix and Tourcoing. Demand focuses first on houses, by far the dominant type in the town, then on apartments in the Centre and in the large estates. Prices, among the most affordable in the metropolitan area, reflect the industrial past of the town and a housing stock dominated by the terraced town house.
