The history of the district

Amiens Nord is a district of large estates set in the north of the city. It grew out of the Amiens-Nord priority development zone, launched from 1959 to answer the post-war housing crisis, through an extension of the city northwards. The work, led by the architect Maurice Novarina, ran from the 1960s to the end of the 1970s, around the Le Pigeonnier area.

The housing of the district consists overwhelmingly of blocks of flats, in the form of aligned slab blocks and towers, typical of the large estates of that era. Amiens Nord is classed as a priority district under French urban policy and has close to 15 000 inhabitants. It concentrates social difficulties, with a median income clearly below that of the city and a high unemployment rate.

The district is the subject of a large-scale urban renewal programme, which is renewing the built fabric, the public spaces and the local facilities. Supply, made up almost entirely of flats in blocks, makes it the most affordable area of the Amiens market, with prices clearly below the rest of the city.

Who buys in Amiens Nord

Amiens Nord attracts mainly first-time buyers and investors looking for the lowest prices in the city. Demand focuses on flats in blocks, at very accessible levels. The urban renewal programme, which is transforming the built fabric and the public spaces, is changing the district, whose market remains the most affordable in Amiens.
