The history of the district

Saint-Acheul is a district in the east of Amiens, stretching between the outer boulevards and the municipalities of Longueau and Cagny. The area has an international reputation in prehistory: in the middle of the nineteenth century, worked flints were found there in the gravel quarries, which would give their name to the Acheulean, a prehistoric culture marked by the biface, a tool worked on two faces.

The district was also the seat of an Augustinian abbey, founded in the eleventh century on the presumed tomb of Saint Firmin, the first bishop of Amiens. The arrival of the railway in Amiens and Longueau in 1846 sped up its growth, with the building of Amiens brick houses for railway workers, textile workers and shopkeepers. At the end of the nineteenth century, an English industrialist created an English quarter there with distinctive houses, complete with bow windows and small gardens.

Sought after for its character as an old outer district, its brick houses and its unusual heritage, Saint-Acheul sees demand carried by families and first-time buyers. Supply consists mainly of Amiens houses and a few apartments, which makes it an intermediate residential area of the Amiens market.
