The history of the district

Brégille occupies a hill on the right bank of the Doubs, east of Besançon, whose high point reaches 458 metres, some 200 metres above the river. Brégille was originally an independent village belonging to the Besançon clergy, whose wealth in the sixteenth century rested on winegrowing. In the nineteenth century, the industrialisation of the banks of the Doubs, in the Prés-de-Vaux area, helped the village grow before it was attached to the town.

The district is marked by its funicular, designed in 1899 to link the bottom and the top of the hill and to let the spa visitors of Besançon-les-Bains reach the woods and green spaces of the heights easily. Brought into service in 1912, it stopped running in 1987. Listed as a historic monument since 2011, it is the subject of a refurbishment project. Today Brégille is a hillside residential district, mixing houses and villas, in a green setting offering views of the old town and the Citadel.

Sought after for its hillside setting, its views and its residential atmosphere, Brégille sits at the top of the Besançon market and is seeing sustained momentum. Supply there is dominated by houses and villas, complemented by upper-floor apartments with a view. The scarcity of property, the quality of the setting and the aspect of the slopes support strong demand from families and from buyers seeking quality of life.

Who buys in Brégille

Brégille attracts families, professionals and buyers seeking a hillside setting with a view, away from the bustle but close to the centre. Demand focuses on the houses and villas of the slopes and on upper-floor apartments with a view of the Doubs and the Citadel. The scarcity of property and the quality of the setting support strong demand at the top of the Besançon market.
