The Centre-ville corresponds to the old core of Brive-la-Gaillarde, the area marked out by the wall begun in 1341 by the four consuls, which earned the town its nickname la Gaillarde after it held out against the English. It is organised around place Charles de Gaulle and the collegiate church of Saint-Martin, listed as a historic monument since 1862.

The district has kept its tight layout, its lanes and its private mansions, among them the hôtel Labenche, now a museum of art and history.
