Île Verte occupies the north of Grenoble, along the left bank of the Isère, facing La Tronche and the teaching hospital. Its development was set off by the arrival of the tram, the bridge over the Isère and the building of the hospital. The avenue du Maréchal Randon, which leads to the hospital and carries tram line B, splits the district in two and forms its main axis. The Île Verte, place du Docteur Girard and La Tronche Hôpital stops shape travel.
The district is marked by its three towers, a hundred metres high and twenty-eight storeys tall, which carry the names of the surrounding massifs: Mont-Blanc, Belledonne and Vercors. The Saint-Roch cemetery, the largest municipal cemetery of the city, covers thirteen hectares and takes up about a third of the area of the district. Between those landmarks, Île Verte has kept a fabric of quiet small streets, greenery inherited from its history and a local retail area.
Sought after for its calm, its immediate closeness to the Isère and to the teaching hospital, the largest employer in the city, and its direct tram service, Île Verte is among the most highly rated areas of Grenoble. Supply is made up mainly of apartments, from the period buildings along the Isère to the homes of the tall towers, prized by families and hospital staff alike.
