The La Source district forms the large southern area of Orléans, about ten kilometres from the centre, on the south bank of the Loire. Created in the 1960s on a planning model close to that of the French new towns, it is the largest district of the city, laid out around the University of Orléans, the floral park and many residential blocks and businesses.

The university campus, which takes in around 15 000 students across some hundred hectares, houses the university presidency in the château de La Source, at the heart of a wooded park where the river Loiret rises at the Bouillon spring.
