The history of the district

The 14th arrondissement took shape from former villages such as Montrouge and Plaisance, incorporated into Paris in 1860. Beneath it lie the Catacombs, laid out in the late 18th century in former quarries to hold the remains transferred from the central cemeteries.

In the early 20th century, the Montparnasse quarter became a major artistic hub, frequented by painters and writers around its cafes and studios. The Montparnasse cemetery, opened in 1824, holds the graves of many intellectual and artistic figures.

The Montparnasse tower, completed in 1973, and the station of the same name mark the north of the arrondissement, while the rest of the 14th has kept a residential character, made up of Haussmann buildings and small streets of former workshops.

Who buys in the 14th

The arrondissement draws families and professionals looking for a quiet, well-connected residential setting, as well as buyers drawn to the proximity of Montparnasse and the Left Bank. The presence of large units and bourgeois buildings steers part of the demand towards three- and four-room flats, while leaving room for small units near the schools and hospitals.
