Grand-Vaux occupies the south-west of Savigny-sur-Orge, cut off from the rest of the commune by the railway and the road infrastructure. The large estate was built there between 1960 and 1966, in tall blocks, to free up ground and make room for green spaces, a shopping centre, schools and a church. Its lanes carry the names of painters, from Gauguin to Delacroix.
The district today has around 4 000 inhabitants for more than 1 600 homes, half of which belong to a social landlord. It is the subject of an urban renewal project led by the town and the Grand-Orly Seine Bièvre territorial authority with the national urban renewal agency: 92 million euros, 580 homes demolished and 970 built. The neighbouring Grand-Val area, around place Saint-Georges and rue Vigier, is tied to the project.
