The history of the district

The Saint-Nicolas district took shape in the nineteenth century, when the town filled in the space between Terra Vecchia and the new port. The place Saint-Nicolas, open to the sea and lined with plane trees, is its centre: it is one of the largest squares in France, a meeting place and the setting for the town's public events.

Behind the square, the boulevard Paoli and the rue César-Campinchi form the retail spine of Bastia, extended by the rue Miot and the rue du Théâtre, where the municipal theatre stands. To the north, the quays of the new port handle the ferry links to mainland France and Italy, along the avenue Pierre-Giudicelli and the boulevard Général-Graziani, as far as the boundary with Toga.

On the market, Saint-Nicolas sits at around 3 242 €/m² for an apartment, above the town average, on a volume of around 68 sales a year. Together with the Saint-Joseph hillside, it is the most active area of Bastia: its average is one of the most reliable in the town. The district has risen by around 16 % over five years and is holding steady over the last twelve months.
