The history of the district

The Les Gibjoncs district extends across the north of Bourges, beyond the railway lines, within the wider Bourges-Nord area. It is one of the large estates built under the priority development zone created at the end of the 1950s, when the city put up close to 6 500 homes in this area between 1954 and the end of the 1970s.

Made up of tower and slab blocks of flats, the district forms, together with La Chancellerie, one of the parts of Bourges-Nord designated as priority neighbourhoods under French urban policy. A first urban regeneration project was launched from 2005 around the redevelopment of Les Gibjoncs.

Since 2020, a new national urban renewal programme running to 2030 has been transforming the district, with demolitions, refurbishments and the redevelopment of public spaces. This long-term work is reshaping the living environment and the housing stock of the area.
