The history of the district

Rateau occupies the east of La Courneuve, between the avenue Jean-Jaurès and the railway. The district owes its name to the electromechanical construction plant founded by the engineer Auguste Rateau, born in 1863 and died in 1930, whose turbine production marked the industrial history of the town. The site passed to the CGE-Alsthom group in 1970.

The cité Rateau, workers' housing built next to the plant, gave its name to the area, which is now shaped by the rue Rateau, the rue de la Tréfilerie and the rue du Docteur-Roux. The fabric mixes housing estates, houses and apartment blocks.

On the market, Rateau stands at around 3 011 €/m² for an apartment, above the town average, on about 7 sales a year. That low volume makes the average sensitive from one year to the next: the price has fallen by close to 20 % over the last twelve months. The median, at 2 824 €/m², gives a more cautious reading of the current market.

Who buys in Rateau

Rateau attracts first-time buyers and families looking for a quiet district close to the shops of Les Quatre-Routes, at a price below that of the areas served by the metro. Demand centres on apartment blocks and on the few houses in the area.
