The history of the district

The Ponts district, also known as the Ponticauds district, extends along the left bank of the Vienne, between the pont Saint-Étienne upstream and the pont Saint-Martial downstream. It is one of the oldest inhabited areas of Limoges, where life was organised around the river: floating timber down to feed the porcelain kilns, dredging sand from the Vienne. The pont Saint-Martial, vaulted and built in 1215 on Gallo-Roman foundations, was for a long time the only crossing over the river.

The district brings together the old, picturesque area of Les Ponts and Le Sablard, in the south-east of the city on the left bank, where historic lanes sit alongside more recent residential areas. The banks of the Vienne, the medieval bridges and the working-class, heritage character of the area make it a place steeped in history, close to the centre.

Sought after for its character, its riverbanks and its history, the Ponts district offers supply made up of period houses, apartments and recent properties in Le Sablard. The areas of Les Ponts and Le Sablard form a market of their own, prized by lovers of period stone and of a riverside setting.
