The history of Vénissieux

Vénissieux is a town of the Lyon metropolitan area, in the south-east of the conurbation, with around 65 000 residents. Its name comes from the Latin Viniciacum, formed on that of a Gallo-Roman landowner, Vinicius. The town entered the industrial era at the start of the twentieth century: between 1915 and 1917, a vast construction site opened near the railway for the Berliet factory, later Renault Véhicules Industriels and then Renault Trucks. The population doubled in a decade, carried by factory employment.

That industrial past shaped the town, as did the large housing estates built in the 1960s, foremost among them the Minguettes plateau, to the south. The town keeps a contrasting urban fabric today, between suburban areas, older buildings in the centre and large estates undergoing urban renewal. The Parilly park, shared with Bron, forms a large green lung to the east.

Vénissieux is linked to Lyon by metro line D, whose terminus is at Vénissieux station, and by tram T4, which follows a north-south axis. Vénissieux station is an interchange hub combining train, metro and tram. That transport service, together with prices more affordable than Lyon itself, shapes the geography of prices: the north, on the boundary with the 8th arrondissement of Lyon around Moulin à Vent and Parilly, forms the top of the market, while the south of the plateau remains the most affordable.

Who buys in Vénissieux

The Vénissieux market attracts varied buyers: first-time buyers who find contained prices immediately next to Lyon, families looking for suburban areas or larger homes, and investors turning to the rental market thanks to the service on metro line D and tram T4. The closeness of the industrial employment hubs, the Parilly park and the roads towards Lyon sustains steady demand. The north of the town, around Moulin à Vent and Parilly, remains the most sought-after area to buy in.
