The history of the arrondissement

The 9th arrondissement, in the south of the city, brings together Mazargues, Sainte-Marguerite, Le Cabot, La Panouse and Vaufrèges. Formerly an area of villages and farmland, it long kept a semi-rural character around the old core of Mazargues.

The arrondissement opens onto the Calanques massif, of which it is one of the main gateways, towards Sormiou and Morgiou. The establishment of the Luminy university campus, in a valley close to the national park, anchored a student and scientific population here.

The 9th is today a residential arrondissement in the south of Marseille, prized for its green setting, its proximity to the Calanques and its village feel. The market mixes houses and apartments at intermediate prices, more affordable than the seafront of the neighbouring 8th.

Who buys in the 9th

The 9th attracts families looking for a green, residential setting close to the Calanques and the schools, as well as buyers seeking houses with gardens in the former villages. Proximity to the Luminy campus also supports student rental demand. Buyers here seek a balance between nature, quiet and access to the rest of the city; properties close to the village of Mazargues and the entrances to the Calanques are particularly valued.
