Montessuy occupies the high point of Caluire-et-Cuire, an area that overlooks the Rhône and offers a panorama over Lyon, the Dauphiné and the Alps. Its name comes from a contraction of « Mont de dessus », the hill above, and the area long served as a strongpoint, occupied by the military for the defence of Lyon.
