The history of the arrondissement

The 2nd arrondissement covers the south of la Presqu'île, from the place Bellecour to la Confluence. Bellecour, one of the largest pedestrian squares in Europe, has structured the district since the 17th century and marks the commercial and bourgeois centre of the city.

La Presqu'île concentrates a classical stone building stock, shopping streets such as the rue de la République and many institutions. To the south, the former port and industrial site of la Confluence has been entirely redeveloped since the 2000s into a mixed-use district, with new housing, offices and cultural facilities.

The 2nd thus combines a much sought-after historic core and a recent sector with contemporary architecture. This duality, together with the scarcity of the older stock, explains prices among the highest in Lyon, despite a marked correction since 2021.

Who buys in the 2nd

The arrondissement draws an affluent, wealth-focused clientele on la Presqu'île, looking for a high-standing apartment close to the shops and the quays, and a younger, more active population at la Confluence, drawn to recent housing and amenities. The share of investors remains notable on small units. The new-build of la Confluence and the older stock of Bellecour meet different expectations, which broadens the range of budgets.
