The history of the arrondissement

The 4th arrondissement occupies the plateau de la Croix-Rousse, at the top of the hill that overlooks the right bank. A canut district in the 19th century, it extended onto the plateau the silk activity born on the pentes of the 1st, with its tall buildings and its workshops.

The plateau is organised around the boulevard de la Croix-Rousse and its market, one of the liveliest in the city. The district has kept a village feel, with local shops, lively squares and a dense community life.

Today the 4th is much sought after by families for its atmosphere, its schools and its market, while remaining linked to la Presqu'île by the metro. This quality of life supports high prices, despite a marked correction since 2021.

Who buys in the 4th

The arrondissement draws mainly families and settled professionals, attached to the village spirit of the plateau, its market and its schools. Demand focuses on family-sized units as well as on canut apartments with fine volumes. Buyers accept an old, tall building stock in exchange for the living environment; the presence of a lift, the floor and the natural light make prices vary within the arrondissement.
