The history of the arrondissement

The 6th arrondissement developed in the 19th century on the former marshland of les Brotteaux, laid out as a residential district after the embankment of the Rhône. The grid plan, the wide avenues and the bourgeois stone buildings date from this period of planned urbanisation.

The parc de la Tête d'Or, created in the 1860s, structures the north of the arrondissement: it is one of the largest urban parks in France, with its lake, its botanical garden and its zoo. Around it, les Brotteaux and the Foch area have concentrated an affluent population and many professionals.

Today the 6th remains the most valued arrondissement in Lyon. It combines a carefully kept Haussmann building stock, the proximity of the park, upmarket shops and direct access to la Part-Dieu. This combination of prestige, greenery and central position makes it a sought-after address for families and wealth-focused buyers.

Who buys in the 6th

The arrondissement draws an affluent clientele: families looking for a bourgeois apartment close to the park and the schools, professionals settled around les Brotteaux, and wealth-focused buyers drawn to the scarcity of good older stock. Demand covers both large family units and small units, which are more liquid on resale. Renovated properties with a park view or a balcony trade above the arrondissement average.
