The history of the arrondissement

The 8th arrondissement occupies the south-east of the city, around Monplaisir, Mermoz and le Bachut. Monplaisir owes its fame to the Lumière brothers, whose factory and family home saw the birth of the cinematograph, now a museum and an institute.

Long a working-class and residential district, the 8th grew denser in the 20th century with large housing estates and detached-house sectors. The redevelopment of the avenue des États-Unis and the arrival of the tram accompanied a gradual renewal of the Mermoz and Bachut districts.

Today the 8th is a residential, family arrondissement of eastern Lyon, well equipped with schools, shops and transport. Its prices, among the most accessible in the city, make it a point of entry for many buyers.

Who buys in the 8th

The arrondissement draws mainly families and first-time buyers looking for space at a measured price, as well as investors targeting rental demand near the eastern hospitals and the tram lines. The stock ranges from an older building in Monplaisir to recent residences in Mermoz and le Bachut. The more accessible budget and the quality of transport are the main drivers of demand.
