The history of the arrondissement

The 15th arrondissement, in the north-west, brings together Saint-Louis, La Cabucelle, La Castellane, Verduron and Les Aygalades. Bordered by the northern harbour basins, it developed in the 19th century around industry, oil works and port activities.

Industrialisation and the extension of the port shaped a working-class arrondissement, marked by significant social housing built in the 20th century. The old cores of Saint-Louis and Les Aygalades have kept an older fabric, along the Huveaune and the hills.

The 15th remains the most affordable arrondissement in Marseille. The plans to extend Euroméditerranée towards the north and the arrival of the metro at Gèze hint at a gradual transformation, in an area that is still very working-class and industrial.

Who buys in the 15th

The 15th is aimed first and foremost at the tightest budgets and at investors, drawn by the lowest prices in the city and strong rental demand. Demand covers apartments in co-ownership and a few houses in the former villages. Buying here calls for good knowledge of the specific area and care over the condition of the buildings, in an area affected by the extension of Euroméditerranée and urban renewal.
